First aid for common emergencies
Knocked-out Tooth
Handle the tooth only by the crown — not the root. If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline. Try to reinsert it into the socket, or keep it in milk or between your cheek and gum. Get to us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid very hot, cold, or hard foods, and call us to arrange an urgent assessment.
Abscess or Facial Swelling
A dental abscess is a serious infection requiring urgent treatment. If you experience significant facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, or a high fever, go to your nearest emergency department and call us immediately.

Call us as early in the day as possible — the sooner you call, the sooner we can see you. If we're fully booked, we'll advise on the best course of action and refer you if needed.
What if it is after hours?
If you're experiencing a serious dental injury or significant facial swelling outside of business hours, please go to your nearest hospital emergency department. For non-life-threatening emergencies, call us first thing the next morning and we'll prioritise your appointment.
Is emergency dental care expensive?
Emergency dental fees vary depending on the treatment required. We'll always discuss the cost before proceeding. We accept all major health funds and process HICAPS claims on the spot. For larger treatments, we can discuss payment plan options.
Can I save a knocked-out adult tooth?
Yes — if you act quickly. The key is to keep the tooth moist and get to us within 30 to 60 minutes. The sooner we see you, the higher the chance of successfully reimplanting the tooth. Store it in milk, saline, or between your cheek and gum, and call us on your way.
Do you treat children in dental emergencies?
Yes. We treat patients of all ages, including children, in dental emergencies. Our team is experienced in managing dental trauma and anxiety in young patients, and we'll do everything we can to make the experience as calm and comfortable as possible.
